Merca Colonial Legacy Port
Fishery and Agriculture Export Harbor

Merc History
Merca is a historic port city located approximately 90 kilometres southwest of Mogadishu along Somalia's Indian Ocean coastline. As one of the country's oldest coastal settlements, Merca has long served as an important centre for maritime trade, fishing, and commerce, connecting coastal communities with domestic and international markets. As early as the 5th to 8th centuries, Merca emerged as a significant port settlement, linking inland communities with coastal towns and regional maritime trade routes. During the medieval period, erca grew into a prominent commercial and administrative center under the Ajuran Sultanate, serving as a pivotal node in the Indian Ocean trade network that connected East Africa with Arabia,Persia, India, and beyond.
During the Italian colonial period (1893–1960), Merca was incorporated into the colonial administration and its port infrastructure was expanded to facilitate the export of agricultural products, particularly bananas and other produce from the fertile Lower Shabelle region by earning it recognition as an important export gateway. In the post-independence era (1960–1990), Merca Port continued to serve as a vital fishing harbor and agricultural export hub, supporting regional commerce, employment, and coastal livelihoods. However, the civil conflict of the 1990s severely damaged the port’s infrastructure, destroying much of its export facilities and fishing capacity, and significantly diminishing its economic role.
Merca Harbor
During the Italian colonial administration, modern port infrastructure at Merca was constructed in the 1930s to support colonial growing agricultural export economy. The port became widely known as “Porto di Banane” (Banana Port) because of its central role in exporting bananas from the fertile Lower Shabelle region to Italy and wider European markets. At the time, banana plantations in Lower Shabelle were among the most productive agricultural enterprises in the country, and Merca Port served as a key maritime gateway for shipping fresh produce overseas. The port’s infrastructure including loading facilities, storage areas, and transport connections to agricultural hinterlands was designed to facilitate efficient export logistics and reinforce Merca’s position as one of Somalia’s principal commercial ports. This period marked the modernization of Merca’s maritime infrastructure and established the harbor’s long-standing legacy as a strategic export center for agriculture and coastal trade.

Today, the revitalization of Merca Old Port presents a unique opportunity to rebuild that legacy by transforming the harbor into a modern fisheries, logistics, and agricultural export hub. Through strategic investment in port infrastructure, cold-chain systems, warehousing, and marine services, Merca can once again become a dynamic center of trade and driving private sector growth, expanding export capacity, creating employment opportunities, and contributing to Somalia’s broader vision for blue economy and agricultural development.
