For decades, seaweed washed ashore along Somalia's beaches and was often regarded as a nuisance or waste material, with little economic value attached to it. Today, this perception is changing. Globally, seaweed is increasingly recognized as a valuable marine resource and an important raw material for a wide range of industries, including food, animal feed, organic fertilizers, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and emerging bio-based materials.

For Somalia, this changing global market presents an important opportunity to transform an underutilized coastal resource into a new blue economy industry. The country's extensive Indian Ocean coastline provides significant potential for sustainable seaweed harvesting and farming, while its strategic location offers access to major markets in the Middle East, Asia and beyond.

Seaweed development can also create new sources of income and employment for coastal communities, particularly women and youth, through farming, harvesting, collection, drying, aggregation, processing, transportation and trading. With investment in resource assessment, technology, infrastructure, quality control and international market access, seaweed could evolve from a coastal nuisance into a commercially viable export industry and an important source of sustainable livelihoods for Somalia's coastal communities.
